REVIEW: Wilder Girls

August 15, 2019

It’s been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty’s life out from under her.

It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don’t dare wander outside the school’s fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything.

But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there’s more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true.

My Thoughts:

Where do I even start with this book? First of all this cover is just not only stunning but perfection when it comes to WIlder Girls. This book is dark, it is gritty and it defies description.

I wasn’t fully sure what to expect with this book, YA can be a bit fluffy when it comes to horror, but fluffy this is not. This all takes place on the grounds of a girl’s boarding school, on an island that has been inflicted with a disease. The “Tox” as they call it mutates and twists each girl in unique ways and cause seizure-like episodes that result in more pain.

What I liked about this book was how it showed how despite the need to literally fight for resources at some times (and they did fight) how this group banded together overall. Everyone was imperfect and had issues, and they all needed each other.

I read this book all in one spooky sitting and loved every single moment of it. The oddness that is the tox and how it twists everyone. The sheer tenacity of these the girls, and the questions it left me with.

Which BTW if you like every plotline tidied up and to finish a book with all the answers there for you, this is not the book for you. It is not about finding out what caused the tox, or where it came from, or how to cure it. This is a book about a group of girls surviving this horror show.

I Give Wilder Girls 5 out of 5 stars.
