REVIEW: Gideon The Ninth

Gideon The Ninth Book Cover
Gideon The Ninth The Locked Tomb Tamsyn Muir Science Fiction Fantasy Tor 10th September 2019 Hardcover 448

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

My Thoughts:

This book had me at Lesbian Necromancers in Space. LESBIAN! NECROMANCERS IN SPACE!!! Then I find out it’s written by a kiwi as well and I simply needed to read this.

I can say rather solidly that it did not disappoint. I love how we start this book right in the deep end. No prologue setting up the story just right there you are. It’s jarring at first but slowly everything folds out in front of you.

The opening scene between Gideon and Crux, ICONIC! It has to be one of my favourite scenes ever written and so clearly shows us what a smart arse Gideon is. I keep saying Gideon is a lesbian Ronan Lynch and I will die by that assessment.

The story is fascinating and interesting and definitely went places I wasn’t expecting it to go. It does get confusing at times with the characters all having similar-sounding names. But really that is a minor complaint.

Harrowhawk is so easy to hate in the beginning as we only see things from Gideon’s perspective. Slowly though we see more of her, well humanity. She becomes quickly one of my favourite characters with her complexity. We all know I’m a sucker for the Enemies to Lovers trope, and this book does not fail.

Overall this is easily one of the best books I have read this year somehow blending Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance and a tad bit of horror all into one book which has its roots in Agatha Christie novels.

I Give Gideon The Ninth 5 out of 5 stars

  1. Great review! I started it recently but couldn’t really get into it. I should give it another chance in some time though because I love the premise!
    Also! Lesbian Ronan Lynch? 👀👀👀

    1. I definitely recommend giving it a second chance as it really opens up and becomes enthralling about halfway in. But as I said the thing I liked about it, is also it’s biggest flaw, it dumps you right in the deep end. Gideon is every bit snarky, crude and an asshole as Ronan Lynch is… 20 out of 10 would date!
