REVIEW: Wicked Saints

June 17, 2019

A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself.

A prince in danger must decide who to trust.

A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings.

Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war.

In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light. Wicked Saints is the thrilling start to Emily A. Duncan’s devastatingly Gothic Something Dark and Holy trilogy..

My Thoughts:

I have to admit that when I received this in my April Owl Crate, I wasn’t that interested in it overall. It just didn’t seem the type of thing that I would overall enjoy. But here it is delivered right into my hands so I might as well give it a go right?

Never have I ever been so glad that a book was delivered to me! I literally cannot stop thinking about this book and have listened to the audiobook as well to hear the pronunciation of some of the words. This book has twists in it that I didn’t expect and I love the two warring methods of magic. The clash of ideologies is ever so fun and fascinating.

“Chosen one” novels can be fairly meh, especially when the chosen one was hidden in mundanity till the start of the novel. Instead, Wicked Saints shows us a chosen one who has been prepared for it her whole life. This still gives her plenty of room for doubt and questioning.

The unexpected allies and fair weather friends aspect of this is rather well written and unexpected. And the world is well written, deep and enjoyable. Slavic based fiction isn’t something we get enough of, or at least something I have read enough of.

My only serious complaint is this leaves too many open plot holes. I know this is going to be a trilogy but still, I would have preferred more answers than given. The last third felt a bit rushed as well and the pacing could have been more enjoyable had the book another 50 or so pages.
