Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.

Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.

Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.

My Thoughts:

I’m not really sure why I picked this up besides what I can only describe as fantasy fatigue. I had just finished We Hunt The Flame and the Grisha Trilogy when I saw this on Scribd. I had heard mixed reviews on it but thought the overall concept was good and we all know I am an absolute sucker for the enemies to lovers trope. So I started listening.

First off the audiobook of this was brilliantly narrated and I really enjoyed that aspect. This was my first Christina Lauren and overall I enjoyed a lot of the writing and the obvious sexual tension. I did find the way Amy and Olive were described so jarringly different I kept forgetting she was a twin.

I’m not a huge reader of Cis/het romances and honestly large parts of this book reminded me why. It was so very heteronormative and honestly I find that boring. This book was rather predictable with a few minor surprises but overall it ended how I expected from the very beginning. Not a bad book, and definitely has me considering some Christina Lauren again in the future.

I give The Unhoneymooners 3 out of 5 stars.
