Viva Durant and the Secret of the Silver Buttons Middle-Grade Mystery Audible Audiobook 4 hrs and 5 mins

Viva Durant, New Orleans’ youngest detective, is on a quest to solve a jazzy mystery involving hidden treasure, while exploring the city’s unique culture, history, and music. This family-friendly audio original features original jazz music from the creator, Ashli St. Armant, and an enthusiastic performance from Audible Hall of Fame narrator, Bahni Turpin.

Plucky 14-year-old Viva Durant heads to New Orleans every summer to spend time with her loving but stern grandmother, known as Gram. After Gram reads Viva an article in the local paper about a missing treasure related to the world-famous song, “Miss Mary Mack,” Viva traverses the Crescent City on an epic adventure to solve the mystery. Along the way she meets some of the city’s most colorful characters as her journey takes her to the French Quarter, a jazz club, a creepy cemetery, and even the circus. Can Viva rise to the occasion and solve this musical mystery?

My Thoughts:

Viva Durant and the Secret of the Silver Buttons is an audible original that I was able to get free one month with my standard account. I thought is sounded like a cute and fun Middle-Grade mystery rooted in New Orleans, and jazz music. I loved Viva as a character but thought that she was written a bit immature, she’s supposed to be 14 but acted more like a 10 year old and is treated as such most of the time. The main plot is based around the american clapping song “Miss Mary Mack” and was a fairly interesting take on it all.

I found the pacing rather quick and fun but light, it seems that everything she ever wanted to achieve was easy to do and had very little resistance. There are no major threats to her and overall I think a modern Middle-Grade book could be a touch grittier/realistic. All of this said there were a few twists that even I didn’t expect and thus was pleased.

The narration is superb and music features throughout which I also enjoyed. Overall this is a cute fun book I’m sure kids all over will love.

I give Viva Durant and the Secret of the Silver Buttons:

    That cover is super cute.
It always throws me off when a character is written far more immaturely than their age should be.
Great review, as always, Brooklynne! 💜
